It can feel intimidating when you’re starting out as a design professional trying to land those first gigs. It’s hard to know where to start. Without an established reputation to back it up, how do you get clients to put their trust in you? You’ve got the skills. You’ve done the training. You’re ready to put your design expertise to work. You know the classic movie line: “If you build it, they will come.” Well, that might work for a group of baseball player ghosts, but it’s not the case in the business world of design. Unfortunately, creating good work just isn’t enough in and of itself. You have to be able to sell that work to people. And before you can sell it to those people, you have to be able to reach them. And in order to reach them…well, you’ve got to know who they are.
Think about what you want your business to look like. What type of clients get you motivated and excited? What type of clients will help your business to continue its growth? Figuring out the answers to these questions is the start of the process of marketing yourself to exactly the kind of client you want and in turn getting the kind of career you want. This isn’t a one-way street. Sure, you have a product to sell, but you also have a brand to build.
In this lecture series, Chris Do and Ben Burns will combine their decades of experience to teach you how to market yourself and land the leads that will convert into business. This is a class for new and new-ish designers looking to start their business and experienced designers looking to ramp up their business and the quality of their clients.
